"Seeing ole 88 on your website was very flattering.  It also brought back many memories.  For the record, the picture was taken at the Mule Mountain Hill Climb, Bisbee, Arizona, September 1966.

The Tach red lined at 8500.  Frequently, I would wind the engine past that.  88 could out corner anything of the day.  Down the straight, it was not as fast as a Cobra, but could outrun Corvettes.  I remember a race in which I was grided in fourth, behind two Cobras and a Corvette.  The track had a short front straight then, in quick succession, a sharp right and a sharp left.  I caught the two Cobras in the second turn and had to back off.  Down the long back straight, the Cobras left me.  I finished in Third place, ahead of the Corvette.

I'm still a Corvair buff.  Currently, I own a 62 ramp side pick-up, a 63 window Greenbriar, a 64 Spyder convertible, a 64 Spyder coupe, a 61 Lakewood, a 62 station wagon, a 65 Corsa, and a 67 Monza coupe.  Also, I have the 64 Monza coupe in which I brought home my son after his birth in 1969.  I restored three of the cars and then drove them until needing restoration again."

"Did you know Doug Roe?  He was the Corvair expert and the one who got me interested in racing.  He had an identical Corvair - No. 8.  88 was a little faster than 8.  Superstition was that no car should have a number that reads upside down.  The numbers 8 and 88 were our response to that."
